Building Community Before the Community

October 24, 2023

With the opening stages of Teravalis underway, here at Howard Hughes®, we believe in giving back to the community and helping our new neighbors any way we can. From combatting hunger to providing aid for cancer research organizations, Teravalis seeks to make a positive impact now—even before our community takes shape.

Below, you’ll find just a few of the organizations we partner with.

All Faith Community Services in Buckeye

All Faith Community Services in Buckeye, helps individuals and families in critical need by providing them with emergency food, clothing, and basic necessities—as well as services that go beyond such emergency aid. All Faith also takes a proactive approach to helping people move from poverty to productivity by providing them with training, resources, and motivational coaching. The nonprofit focuses on individualized case management, training, and support programs designed to encourage individuals as they develop job skills, secure employment, overcome obstacles, and work to improve their lives and the lives of their families.

Teravalis is proud to volunteer by handing out emergency food boxes, unloading trucks and sorting food and clothing. Through our donations, All Faith was able to procure a new walk-in freezer to help them store much-needed resources for the community. We continued our support this year through donations and recent volunteering for Hunger Awareness Month and in support of their Youth Job Training Program.

Feed My Starving Children

Feed My Starving Children is committed to stopping the deaths of children from preventable causes such as pneumonia, malaria, and malnutrition.

Last March, we volunteered at a meal-packing event at their Mesa location. Together, we were able to help other members of the community pack 150 boxes. That’s over 32,400 meals that will go on to feed 88 kids for a year.

In November, we will be volunteering again for their Hope Filled Holiday event, which is taking place at Arizona State University Sun Devil Fitness Complex located at 400 E Apache Blvd in Tempe.

9/11 Day of Service

Founders David Paine and Jay Winuk started 9/11 Day shortly after the tragic events of September 11. Its mission is to “take back the day,” turning 9/11 into a day of doing good and helping those in need.

Howard Hughes® has donated a total of $25,000 to their cause to help with their Meal Pack events, and helped prepare 250,000 meals for people experiencing food insecurity in the local community.

Leukemia and Lymphoma Society

The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society is the global leader in the fight against blood cancer. Their contributions have totaled over $1.6 billion in cancer research funds since 1949.

After losing his mother to cancer in 2015, Howard Hughes® Phoenix Region President Heath Melton became immersed in the quest to help cure cancer, pouring his heart into the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society fundraising efforts associated with their hallmark event, Light the Night

Melton has been recognized in Forbes Magazine as an LLS top Executive Challenge Fundraiser 2016-2023, having a combined impact of over $1 million. Most notably, he was honored to be the #1 fundraiser in 2021 & 2022, a first in LLS history. His efforts are dedicated to the memory of his mother.

Native American Connections

Native American Connections is an organization that helps improve the lives of individuals and their families through Native American culturally appropriate health, affordable housing, and community development services.

Howard Hughes® has a long history of volunteering with Native American Connections, helping with property clean up at Pendleton Court recovery housing site and HomeBase Transitional and Emergency Housing for Youth.

Our organization also donates to Native American Connections to help them continue to do good, supporting individuals in alcohol and drug recovery, family stabilization, and community wellness.

11th Annual Jerry Colangelo Basketball Hall of Fame Golf Classic

Jerry Colangelo is a legend in the Arizona sports community, having previously owned the Phoenix Suns, Phoenix Mercury, Arizona Sandsharks, Arizona Rattlers, and the Arizona Diamondbacks. For the last 11 years, the Jerry Colangelo Basketball Hall of Fame Golf Classic has raised more than $1.6 million for the sport of basketball. The funds help to support the Hall of Fame’s many initiatives, including youth outreach, education, museum preservation, and more.
