What is WaterSense?

Sustainability is a core value at Howard Hughes, not only by supporting initiatives that help our environment but also by investing in innovative technology that focuses on the long-term preservation of our valuable resources.

Teravalis is proud to be recognized as a voluntary partner in WaterSense, a program sponsored by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) that encourages innovation in the marketplace to help strengthen water efficiency and ethical use of U.S. water supplies.

Every residential home in Teravalis will achieve the WaterSense Homes Certification. Below, we’ll lay out some of the major benefits of owning a WaterSense-certified home, along with several other water efficiency innovations within our community.

The Benefits of a WaterSense Home

On average, a WaterSense home saves families around 50,000 gallons of water a year. WaterSense-labeled homes are verified according to the EPA’s stringent mandatory checklist and must be 30 percent (30%) more water-efficient than a typical new construction home.

WaterSense labeled homes meet consumers’ demand for a whole-house solution to help them save water, energy, and money while maintaining a high level of performance.

What criteria must a home demonstrate to become WaterSense certified?

  • Water-efficient plumbing installed throughout the home
  • Appliances that feature water-efficient technology
  • Efficient delivery of hot water throughout the home
  • Smart landscaping design incorporating water wise plants
  • Innovative irrigation design and technology

Teravalis is committed to ensuring every residential home will include these types of features to limit our overall impact on the environment.

What Types of Products Carry the WaterSense Label?

Several products meet the criteria for the WaterSense label. Residential homes in Teravalis will include a mix of these, along with smart home products that will give our residents more control over their water usage. These products include:

  • Water-efficient bathroom faucets
  • High-efficiency toilets
  • Low-use showerheads
  • Smart meters that help residents better manage their usage
  • Drought-tolerant landscape, drip irrigation, and smart irrigation controllers

Innovative Water-Efficient Facilities Throughout Teravalis

Beyond building WaterSense-certified homes, Teravalis will include a state-of-the-art water reclamation plant on the premises. Water reclamation involves converting municipal or industrial wastewater into water that can be reused for several purposes. These may include irrigating landscaping and open space, filling bodies of water, recharging the aquifer and more.

By responsibly reusing our resources, Teravalis will be able to have a positive impact on our surrounding environment. Through our many sustainability projects, we aim to encourage others within to embrace in the future.
