Each year, Howard Hughes® releases its community report to provide a transparent look into our parent company’s collective efforts, from sustainability to growth. This year saw massive improvements across the board. Howard Hughes master planned communities met several sustainability goals and showcased innovations that will likely become the standard throughout the industry.

Below, we’ve provided a snapshot of some of the most notable highlights for the regions in 2022, as many of them offer a look at the future of the newest upcoming community, Teravalis. Our 2023 report will be available in 2024.

Sustainability

At Howard Hughes, sustainability is a top priority within all its master planned communities. This means holding to strict goals that continuously improve on environmental impact and the health and lives of residents and the surrounding population. Efforts are aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and in collaboration with industry partners, nonprofits, and mission-focused organizations to ensure our developments promote a more sustainable world for everyone. Below are some of the improvements made across the nation.

  • In 2022, Howard Hughes further improved on its already exceeded 2027 target of 49.74 energy per square foot per year, falling below 30 in energy use intensity per square foot per year.
  • Howard Hughes also further improved (and exceeded) the 2027 carbon emissions goal of .0051 metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent per square foot per year by maintaining a level below .003.
  • Finally, Howard Hughes made huge strides toward its 2027 water goal of 22.38 gallons per square foot per year by dropping below 27 gallons per square foot per year.

Several Howard Hughes communities maintained or were awarded 94 total green certifications from several prominent environmental organizations. These include:

  • Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) is widely regarded as the leading green building rating system. LEED awards to organizations that produce healthy, highly efficient, and cost-saving green buildings that offer both environmental and societal benefits.
  • ENERGY STAR is a U.S. program jointly run by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and U.S. Department of Energy. Homes that are awarded the coveted ENERGY STAR certification must be at least 10% more efficient than other homes built to code and must demonstrate a 20% improvement on average.
  • The BOMA 360 Performance Program is an international organization that evaluates buildings that outperform competitors across areas of operations and management. In fact, in 2022 Howard Hughes Management Services Company Ranked #7 among the top 10 companies that have the most BOMA360 Buildings.

Here is a list of the many awards Howard Hughes communities won in 2022:

  • Texas, with 14 LEED certifications, 11 ENERGY STAR certifications, and 14 BOMA360 certifications.
  • Maryland, with 13 LEED certifications, 7 ENERGY STAR certifications, and 10 BOMA360 certifications.
  • Nevada, with 7 LEED certifications, 1 ENERGY STAR certification, and 2 BOMA360 certifications.
  • Hawaii, with 12 LEED certifications.
  • New York, with 2 LEED certifications and 1 ENERGY STAR certification.

Community Growth

Howard Hughes is unique from other master planned developers in the nation. While we partner with the country’s leading homebuilders, our communities offer so much more, including state-of-the-art amenities, ample open spaces, and intelligent infrastructure. The goal is to provide a unique environment for residents where they can live, work, play, and discover. Below are some of the most notable highlights.

  • Summerlin in Las Vegas recently opened the 1700 Pavilion, which provides 266,000 square feet of Class A office space. This facility was awarded the LEED Silver award for sustainability.
  • The Woodlands in Texas welcomed the Creekside Park Medical Plaza, a 33,000-square-foot facility with Class A medical office space. Also built in 2022, the 20,000-square-foot Memorial Hermann Medical Office Building has Class A medical office space.
  • Ward Village in Hawaii opened Kō‘ula, providing 565 condominiums.
  • Bridgeland in Texas is now home to Starling, which includes 358 units of multifamily rental development.
  • The Seaport in New York opened the Tin Building, offering 54,000 square feet of dining and retail space.

Amenities

Connection is vital to any community, which is why Howard Hughes provides a wide range of amenities and events where residents can gather and build strong relationships. 2022 was no different, providing numerous spaces where residents can gather and enjoy time with their families and loved ones. In 2022, Howard Hughes hosted more than 700 events across its communities, ranging from arts and entertainment to events focused on health and well-being. Below are the most notable highlights across the country.

  • At The Woodlands, Howard Hughes commissioned nationally acclaimed artist Alex Katz to create a 35,000-square-foot mural called Flowers. Currently one of the largest murals in Texas, it anchors a new 2.3-acre outdoor gathering space in The Woodlands Waterway Square District.
  • Bridgeland hosted its annual Nature Fest, showcasing its 30-acre park and celebrating environmental stewardship with a wide variety of nature-based entertainment.
  • Summerlin hosted its first annual Lei Day Parade in honor of Asian American Pacific Heritage Month. The event hosted a wide range of entertainment from Nani Ola Hawaiian Dance Company, Na Hula o Kaleiokapualani, and Tevakanui Polynesian Dance Company.
  • Victoria Ward Park in Ward Village enjoyed the return of Kona Nui Nights, a three-evening event featuring live Hawaiian music and hula performances.
  • The Seaport saw the creation of The Corner, a  gathering place  providing vacant retail space for talks, art exhibits, live music, local markets, fitness classes, and kids activities.
